The
Mergui Archipelago
In
1997 the Mergui Archipelago in the south of Myanmar (Burma) was
opening up to foreigners for the first time in over fifty years.
Since then the Mergui Archipelago has been left largely alone and
today it is an area of some mystery. Numerous islands remain
unexplored, and the region presents the possibility of hundreds of
exciting new dive sites. Trips here certainly have an exploratory
feel,
with
visitors being amongst the first foreign faces ever seen by local
nomadic Moken people (Burmese sea gypsies).
The topography of the area comprises mainly undulating hills, no
higher than 600 m (2000ft), allowing for exploration of the islands.
There are literally hundreds of islands, islets and outcrops, many
of the larger ones boasting glorious beaches fringed by rich
mangroves and with streams flowing down from the elevated land.
Wildlife is profuse, with Brahminy Kites and White-bellied Sea
Eagles circling in contention for fish. Over the primary rainforest
small green parakeets are common and Wreathed, Pied and Great
Hornbills frequently patrol the skies.
However, the area's great attraction is diving with big fish, namely
sharks, rays and a wealth of pelagic fish. The excitement at a
number of the open ocean sites is indescribable. The Burma Banks and
Black Rock attract a huge variety of sharks as well as frequent
schools of Manta Rays. There is a healthy array of smaller reef life
at many sites like the Twin Sisters (south & north). The Little
Torres, for instance, has a relatively shallow plateau with plenty
to see, while fringing reef off the beaches on larger islands are
also suitable.
