Travelers Guide to Phuket
Tourist
Activities
|
Introduction
We have compiled the
most complete list of activities and things-to-do during your stay
on Phuket available anywhere. We have sought out the leading
companies in each activity, those who have established a track
record of providing a quality service at a fair price. We do not
accept advertising so we maintain the right to list or not list
companies as we deem proper. The travel industry is geared for
big, they like big boats, and big buses, because it is easier for
them to schedule customers. But Phuket is a small island, many of
the best activities, and places to visit are in small
out-of-the-way locations, or are provided by small companies. Our goal is to provide you with enough local
information that you can make informed choices about how to spend
your holiday time and money. If you would like to support our
project by ordering a copy of our guidebook or if you feel your
company should be included in our book please contact the author
at the below e-mail address.
Thai
Boxing (Muay
Thai)
If you dont mind the violence,
a Thai boxing match is worth attending for the pure spectacle and
the wild musical accompaniment, the ceremonial beginning of each
match, and the frenzied betting around the stadium.
The training of a Thai boxer and
particularly the relationship between the boxer and teacher is
highly ritualized. As the boxers enter the ring, they perform a
special pre-fight dance known as the "ram muay". During
the dance, they wear a headband given by their trainer. It is a
sacred talisman earned after many years of dedication to the art.
The dance starts with "wai khru" -- each boxer kneeling
and bowing three times, a show of respect to his teacher. With the
ceremonies complete, the fight begins. Each fight consists of five
rounds of three minutes each. Accompanying the fight is music
stimulated by action in the ring, rising and falling as the boxers
battle it out. All surfaces of the body are considered fair
targets, and any part of the body except the head may be used to
strike an opponent. Common blows include high kicks to the neck,
elbow thrusts to the face and head, knee hooks to the ribs, and
low crescent kicks to the calf. A contestant may even grasp an
opponents head between his hands and pull it down to meet an
upward knee thrust. Punching is considered the weakest of all
blows and kicking merely a way to soften up ones
opponent; most matches end with a knee or elbow strike.
The origins of this martial art
and sport are thought to stretch back to the wars with the Burmese
during the 15th century. Thailands first famous boxer was one,
Nai Khanom Tom who was said to have single-handedly defeated
a dozen Burmese fighters in a wager for freedom. A Thai king, Phra
Chao Seua (The tiger King) is said to have been an incognito
participant in many boxing matches in the early part of his reign.
The sport has changed a lot from the days when boxers would wrap
their fists in thick horsehide trimmed with cotton soaked in glue
and broken glass for maximum impact with minimum knuckle damage.
Many changes initiated to make the sport safer have reduced the
high incidence of death and injury. But Thai boxing is still a
violent contact sport and considered by many as the ultimate in
unarmed combat.
Thai Boxing matches are held
every Friday night at the Boxing stadium in Phuket town.
Occasional matches are held in Patong. Demonstrations of Muay Thai
are held in many of the tourist areas but they are mostly for
show.
Jungle Bungy
Jumping
A beautiful lakeside setting that
is worth a visit even if you do not jump. A pleasant place to sip
a cold drink while waiting for the next brave soul to mount the
platform. Unlike New Zealand where most bungy jumps take off from
lofty bridges with rivers below, the bungy jump sites in Kahtu
take off from a metal cage hoisted by a crane to a height of 44
meters. Below the cage is a used tin mine lake. Anyone from 40 to
230 Kg are welcome to make the jump. The operation is highly
technical, the equipment is of a high standard and the personnel
are qualified Jump Masters. Couples may jump together if they
desire. Costs 1200 baht per jump including a T-shirt.
Ten minutes from Patong on the main road to Phuket town just
follow the signs.
Catapult Bungy Jump
Reverse bungy, or a catapult, is
the latest concept in aerial thrills. The jumper wears a body
harness similar to that of para-sailing instead of having his
ankle strapped. This reverse action taxes the nerves less, as you
need not jump off a platform. Instead you will be fastened to the
ground while the elastic cord is stretched and then you are
catapulted from the ground to a height of 33 meters before you
"yo-yo" on the elastic cord. The price is 600 baht per
jump.
Located at the end of Soi Sunset by the Expat Hotel.
Go
Kart Track
This speedway sport
around a loopy figure eight shaped track is great family fun. The
circuit covers a distance of 600 meters and the 16 go-karts range
from 100cc to 230cc classes. There are double seaters and smaller
go-karts for children. Cost 800 baht for 30 minutes.
Located about 2 km from
Patong Beach on the main highway to Phuket Town.
Phuket Water-ski
Cableways
Offers an opportunity to water
ski around a man-made oval lake in water the color of a cup of
coffee with cream. A suspended cable propels you around the course
at a boring slow steady speed. This is one of the establishments
that feel visitors should pay more money than native Thai
visitors.
Pirates Cove Miniature
Golf

cleverly designed 36 hole miniature golf range. Play 18 Holes for
150 Baht or 36 holes for 250 Baht. Has a snack bar serving tasty
Thai & western food. Claims to have the best hamburger on the
island.

Dino Park
Feature a 18 hole mini golf with
a prehistoric environment and high tech special effects. Putt
around dinosaurs, waterfalls and erupting volcanoes. Hamburger
stand with bar and music in the evenings. Family entertainment.
Green fee 200 baht 18 holes.
Located next to Marina Cottage in Karon Beach.
Simon
Cabaret
A super-deluxe drag-queen cabaret
show. A popular attraction in all of the beach resorts in
Thailand. Many Thai transvestites demonstrate a real talent in
dressing as women, singing and dancing. A favored tourist
destination in spite of the fact they adhere to the policy of
charging foreign guests more than visiting Thais. Two shows daily
at 7:30 and 9:30 PM.
Located 100/6-8 Mu 4 Patong-Karon Road.
Phuket
Butterfly Farm & Aquarium
Open daily 9AM-6PM, Tel: 215 616.
A world of free flying butterflies in a man-made tropical
environment that contains thousands of colorful-winged butterflies
in various stages of their lifecycles. It is impressive to see so
many butterflies at one time feeding and fluttering on flowers and
plants. Included is an educational illustration on the birth of
these beautiful creatures and how they perform a vital function in
our natural environment. Adjoining to the garden is a large
collection of tropical insects from the forests of Phuket
including some huge beetles, and a scorpion pit.
The Aquarium is filled with
numerous tanks of colorful corals and some strange looking fish
like the dog-face puffer and the long-horned cowfish. Bigger
specimens include giant moray eels, sleek black tip sharks, and a
playful otter in its own water-world.
From Phuket Town drive north on Yaowarat Road 3km (2miles). Turn
left and then right into Paniang Lane, following the signs some
700m to the Phuket Butterfly Garden and Aquarium.
Thai
Village
Two shows daily, 11 AM and 5:30
PM Tickets cost 220 baht, children at half price. Reserve a seat
by calling 214-860 or 214-861 or you can book through a travel
agent. Like the Thai Village locations in Bangkok and Chiang Mai,
it provides visitors with a brief sampling of southern Thai
culture. A colorful medley of classical and folk dances, sword
fighting, the bamboo art of self defense, and Thai boxing, the
finale is a Thai wedding. All performed in native costumes. A
demonstration on tin mining and rubber tapping reflect two of the
major natural resources of Phuket. After the show, exit the hall
to an outdoor arena where elephants show how they handle huge teak
logs. In an open-air area, artisans demonstrate how southern
crafts are made. Near the entrance of the village are nurseries
filled with some 40,000 beautiful orchids that may be purchased
and shipped home as gifts.
To reach the Thai village, drive north on Thepkastri Road (H402).
Turn left at KM2.5, just before a huge BMW sign, drive 1km (1/2
mile) more and park.
Phuket
Seashell Museum
Open daily the usual business
hours a truly remarkable building. The museum is in reality
Phukets oldest and most comprehensive shell shop. Many cheap
and unusual gifts.
Phuket
Shooting Range
There are two shooting ranges
especially designed for those experienced in using hand guns and
rifles. Available are hand guns and rifles of varying caliber. All
ammunitions used are special range bullets. The cost varies
according to the gun models and quantity of bullets spent. For
example 10 bullets of 22 cost 350 baht and 5 bullets of 9mm cost
490 baht.
The shooting range is located on 82/2 Patak Road, 800 meters from
the Chalong traffic circle. Hours of operation are from 09.30 to
6.00 PM.
Snake
Farm
Part of the Phuket Shooting Range
complex this show is part educational with demonstrations on what
to if you encounter a snake in the wild, and how to treat a wound
if you are unfortunate enough to be bitten. Very useful
information because there are a large number of snakes living on
Phuket including the king Cobra. The part of the show that
includes seemingly sensible young men dance around, kiss, and
otherwise annoy the snakes may make you a bit squeamish.
Follow the directions to the Phuket Shooting Range.
